A Cinematic Quickie & Le Sugasm 72
So, I wanted to rhapsodize about the brilliance of The Lives of Others, but in between walking out of that windy-Saturday matinee and now, far too much has transpired and my pensive mood brought about by that spell-bindingly good film has segued to bitchyness about other things. But, hey, I'll try.
I don't watch a lot of crappy movies. Having spent seven years working in the industry and having seen far too many of the "best movies ever" according to various experts, I'm pretty self-informed about what makes a good film, and I don't latch onto movies just because they're about a "place" I'm in or have been in during my own life. I watch cinematography, editing, acting, symbolism, and more, and when it all comes together for greatness, as it so seldom does, I am in my movie-going glory.
Today was such a day. The Lives of Others is a first film for its director (with a really long German name I don't feel like looking up) and it's fucking great. The director's 31 and I loathe him for being so brilliant so young. It's one of those films that really gets into the head of its characters and brings you to a place where you have to examine its relevance in your existence. The short and the sweet of it is this: Takes place primarily in 1984, in East Germany, and is largely about the Stasi's (E. German secret police) directive to know everything about everyone. It's a fascinating look at one man's indoctrination into the beauty of living the artistic life (albeit vicariously), and what the love of art contributes in riches to the lives of those who love & live it. It's one of those movies I could tell you about the plot, but then you'd know too much going in. Ignorance is cinematic bliss, so don't read those fucking reviews that tell you about plot -- you don't need to know plot to know it's a good movie.
Suffice to say -- the acting is brilliant, the editing is effortless, the direction is succinct, and the movie as a whole works from start to finish, and I personally didn't see any flaws. What a refreshing treat it is. Then there's the great use of literary devices like irony and foreshadowing that just rounds the entire experience out. Short and sweet: It has espionage, sex, betrayal, music, loss, redemption, suffering, desire, intrigue, dupicity, and more.
It has me thinking a lot about our relationships and the limits of trust, and what personal weakness can do to jeopardize the loves and the lives of all those around us. Today is not a day for articulation, so I promise to try and mine this movie-going experience for more so that I may share with you what it has aroused in me. I'd like to see it again and will strongly weigh the option of buying it for my extensive DVD collection.
For the meantime, though, these people know what they've meant to say, and here it is for your enjoyment. Without ado, Sugasm 72.
