Something New Is Afoot

I finally bit the bullet and decided to put my money where my mouth is yesterday, and signed up to volunteer at some of the upcoming festivals this year. I'm tired of all my married and practically married friends, and I need to meet some people in MY boat. Single, that sort of thing.

The e-dating thing is completely pointless. I have no idea what it is, but something about me gets lost in electronic translation, so it's best I stick to in-the-flesh dealings, but the dealings I have continue to be with the married types.

So, I'm volunteering. You know, cultural festivals.

I used to do a lot of that. I did it when I lived in the Yukon for a year. Being a small-town place, everyone volunteered someplace. I worked part-time in the movie theatres, volunteered with the theatre groups, that sort of thing. I saw anything that happened in town for free. When I moved back to the city, I did the same, until an ex started coveting more of my time and I fell out of the habit.

I volunteered a lot in my early 20s. I've started noticing that all the people I think seem to have it together the best, socially etc, are all volunteering in areas that interest them. It's not like it's a major revelation, but it goes to show you how easy it is to forget the obvious sometimes.

And it's the best time of year to be getting going, volunteering-wise. The writer's fest looms, as does the international film fest, as well as the fringe fest.

So, I guess I have a plan of attack now. I do have to say that I *have* been pretty social of late -- going to more parties, etc -- but it's been with married people. And that's not really accomplishing much on the Get Steff Laid front, thanks very much. Hence my "plan of attack" and all. Getting active both phsyically AND socially. Perfect timing.

I think it's going to be a fun, but busy, fall. I'm looking forward to getting out there and Being Me in interesting circles. It'll be nice to be a part of the bigger picture, too. And making some connections certainly couldn't hurt. I bet I'll even run into old amigos, too. God knows there's enough of 'em floating about out there.

Any of you changing up your mixes, too?
